Engineering & Environmental Services for Virginia Railway Express Crystal City Station Improvements

Arlington, VA

As the second busiest station in the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) system, as well as the destination for about 18 percent of VRE riders and the proposed future home for Amazon’s HQ2, the present configuration of Crystal City Station is inadequate for current and future needs. By providing a reconfigured station with a longer platform that is served by two tracks instead of the present-day single track, the station improvements will enhance safety and reliability of the railroad, while mitigating operational bottlenecks and expanding train capacity. These improvements will also benefit the overall functionality of the station.

Drawing upon our previous experience completing the planning and study phase of VRE’s Crystal City Station Improvements effort, VHB is working with VRE to transition the project to the next stage of development by providing engineering and environmental services for the proposed station improvements. Efforts include refinement of the conceptual design, development of preliminary design, preparation of environmental documentation, permitting, and public and stakeholder outreach. VHB’s years of experience serving VRE and our unique knowledge of the project area allows us to deliver an innovative design solution for the Crystal City Station, a critical component of VRE’s overall strategic development plan.
